The Academy is about to go live, with the first two events in March.
First there is the training day with Jim Saltonstall on 13 March, and then we host a match racing event for Southampton Solent University on 19 March with several other University teams taking part. We have several new young Members taking part and our thanks are due to those boat owners who are taking Academy members on board for their first training runs. |
Commodore John Beardsley says: 'I am so proud of the Members that qualified us as a Volvo Champion Club last year. The Splash Club is 21 this year. The JCs are not far behind, but there has been a big gap when the JCs go off to Universities and we tend to lose touch. I see the Academy as the crucial step that completes the trail from age 5 to 25, and, I hope, to becoming a member of the Southern for life. The Academy members will help to crew other Members' yachts and I am sure that they are keen enough to improve standards as they go. They are a large part of our future and I am sure that Members will welcome and encourage them'.
You will soon see the Academy members sporting their red 'Royal Southern Academy' gilets around the Club and the race tracks. If you know of any talented 18-25 sailors that are not members, they can apply to join as temporary Academy members and then get involved. Please ask them to get in touch with Rebecca in the Office or send their contact details to her. The mission is: " To encourage and increase the number of Academy Members, both existing and new to the Club, sailing on Club members boats". That's a 'win-win' for owners and crew alike.
The event team for Saturday 13 March is Ed Dyer, Karen Henderson-Williams and Colin Sinclair, with Chris Mansfield flying the Flag. Can you help them? We want this to be a big success: the plan is to dovetail Academy events with the Club sailing programme and help the young members to take on and run their own programme, afloat and ashore.
Next month we'll tell you how it's all going. It's sure to be cold and wet, but things can only get better!
