On a recent visit to the Maritime Museum at Greenwich Members Henry and Janice Trembecki spotted and photographed this magnificent cup.
The card describing the piece says:
Royal Southern Yacht Club Trophy
by Edgar Finley and Hugh Taylor, London 1891
This yachting trophy was presented by Queen Victoria to the Royal Southern Yacht Club in 1891.
The race was won by the Earl of Dunraven's yacht, Valkyrie.
The figure of Neptune and a scene of racing yachts are included in the decoration.

Overall: 600 x 290 mm
As in those days it was the practice to retain any trophies won this raises the question;
Who sold the family silver?
The answer is we are not sure. We know only that the cup was sold to Christies in November 1987.
It is possible it was part of Lord Dunraven's estate. More when we know it . .

The 56 ton, 90 ft cutter ValkyrieThe first of three notable racing yachts of that name, was designed by G.L.Watson and built in 1888 by J.C.Fay of Southampton.
She was commissioned by the well-known politician and yachtsman the Earl of Dunraven (1841-1926) originally as a challenger for the America'sCup. Although this challenge never actually took place, under Lord Dunraven's ownership 'Valkyrie' was highly successful in the 1889, 1890 and 1891 seasons, winning many prizes with Captain Tom Diaper of Itchen as her sailing master. |
