About the RSrnYC Trust
"The Royal Southern Yacht Club Trust exists to promote the advancement of amateur sport and, in particular, the provision of facilities and assistance to enable and encourage participation in sailing and yachting".
Following a bequest by a member of the Club, the late Sir Michael Cobham, the Club set up the Royal Southern Yacht Club Trust with the aim of enabling and encouraging sailing activities for all. Currently the principle means of achieving this is to provide grants for individuals and organisations where the need has been demonstrated.
The Trustees meet twice a year to determine which applications for grants the Trust is to support. They are tending to favour more local applicants. In the past year grants have been awarded to organisations including the Hamble Sea Scouts, the Southampton and the Warsash Sea Cadets, YMCA Fairthorne Manor and Fairbridge Solent.
Amongst the individuals who have received grants are several young people aiming for national and international championships via the RYA's schemes, and others starting their sailing through training courses and on Tall Ships. Amongst disable people who have received a grant is Geoff Holt; Geoff completed his 'personal Atlantic' in which he sailed from the Canaries to the Caribbean as part of his work demonstrating that disability need not be a barrier to achieving something positive in life.
The Trustees are delighted at the sailing successes of many of those who have received grants.
Grants
The next round of grants will be made in the Spring of 2013 from applications received by 4th March 2013.  Applications will be considered for sailing activities taking place up till the end of 2013.
It is expected that the following round of grants will be made in September 2013 from applications received in the previous months.

Friends of the RSrnYC Trust
While the Trustees intend, subject to donors' wishes, to keep bequests to the Trust intact as capital and make grants from interest receipts, subscriptions from the 'Friends' will increase the amount available for grants straight away, and qualify for Gift Aid to both the Trust and the donor.

Bequests
A bequest to the Trust can be made to be applied at the Trustees' discretion within the Objectives of the Trust, or with a request that it be applied in a particular way provided that it falls within the Trust's Objectives. For instance, the Trustees may be requested to apply a bequest for the benefit of young or disabled sailors, or to provide equipment that facilitates sailing in general. The bequest can be added to the Trust's general funds or retained as a named fund within the Trust.

Application Form
Grants
Applications should fall within the Trust's Objective of "The advancement of amateur sport and in particular the provision of facilities and assistance to enable and encourage participation in sailing and yachting." 
In addition they should come under one or more of the following categories:
i.  Young people wishing to take part in training or youth development activities including qualifying regattas.
ii.  Disadvantaged people, for example those who are disabled or not earning.
iii.  Taking part in Tall Ships or other offshore voyages.
iv.  Participation in Class or RYA recognised championships.
Supporting information should be provided that demonstrates to the Trustees financial need and how the applicant qualifies under the Trust's Objects and categories.  The Trustees will look for evidence that the applicant is also seeking or providing other sources of funding and will not normally fund more than 50% of the total cost of any activity.  The Trustees will not normally fund on-going revenue needs.
Applications are welcomed from all, whether a Club Member or not.

The Trustees hope to be able to support a good mix of applications for a variety of sailing activities.
