Cruising at The Royal Southern Yacht Club
Not every sailor wants the cut and thrust of competitive racing and those looking for a more relaxed time afloat gravitate towards the Cruising Division, which offers many entertaining activities. Mid-week rallies provide a perfect interlude in a busy week and the ports and harbours of the Solent are regular venues. Lymington, Yarmouth, Newtown and Beaulieu being particularly popular whilst Cowes, Bembridge and Wootton Creek all welcome the fleet back on a regular basis.
Not that racing is entirely ignored. More competitive cruising crews can be found racing on handicap in the Solent, enjoying the more cerebral challenges of the pursuit race and venturing further afield. Recent years have seen Royal Southern yachts racing to the West Country, Channel Islands and France. Longer cruises, often in company with boats from the Motorboat Division, have included rallies to Dunkirk, Paris, Rotterdam and Stockholm, whilst the motorboat flotilla has ventured to Penzance and the Isles of Scilly, the Golfe de Morbihan and the Channel coasts of Brittany and Normandy.
Members of the Cruising Division are not averse to going much further afield, often bareboat chartering to cruise in company from the Pacific north-west of the USA and Canada to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand.
