Cruising Seminar Report in Cruising Committee
Posted By: RSrn Website Team Read By 172 Visitors

The Cruising Committee organised their second seminar on Saturday 29th March, which was attended by 33 members and 12 guests.
It was kicked off by member Derek Gange giving an informative and amusing talk about his cruise with his wife Diana from Crosshaven around the coast of Southern Ireland.
They enjoyed some interesting anchorages in spite of the rather inclement weather. He showed some super photos of the various bays, land marks and villages interspersed with charts. It proved very useful for those who are hoping to cruise in that area this summer.

The next speaker was Peter Bruce the well known author and sailor. His talk was entitled 'Aspects of Heavy Weather Sailing' He gave us some good advice on how to cope with large breaking waves and batten down during strong winds. He has some amazing photos which made us feel that we were very happy to be on dry land!
After lunch Peter Chennell the Sea Safety Manager from the RNLI gave us advice on making sure all our safety equipment was ready for use and working properly. Also he talked about how the lifeboats go about their rescue and the coastguard helicopter. He suggested that it would be a good idea for all those attending to have a Sea Check by the RNLI if they had not had one already.
The last session was given by Charlie Mills from Ocean Safety. He gave information about life jackets, life rafts and EPIRBs. He showed us what sort of equipment was packed in life rafts which was quite an eye opener. All those attending seemed to enjoy the day and found it very useful and informative.
