Ladies Afloat April
Oh ye of little faith! After what originally appeared to be a non-starter due to bad weather, the first Ladies Afloat outing of the season turned out to be a resounding success!
Despite the gloomy skies, rain & notwithstanding one or two earlier cancellations, a larger group than usual turned up in the upper bar of the Club at our pre-declared meeting time of 10:00 hrs. We chatted, looked glumly out of the window, drank some coffee, commiserated with one another, drank some more coffee and held a straw poll of intentions which varied from "definitely not" to "well, possibly"
It wasn't just imagination was it? the sky in the direction of the Island really did seem brighter than it was half an out ago and wasn't the rain slightly lighter now? After a further consultation of two independent latest weather forcasts, the skippers made a calculated decision that a potter over to Cowes could be on, without mishap & perhaps only a little dampness.
With that, two or three minds were changed and 12 stalwarts boarded Karisma, Paladin & Olketa just as the rain stopped.
Our intended destination was Shepards Wharf. On our way we were treated to a rather spectacular display by three fire ships with all their hoses turned on pointing skywards in salute as we passed, no doubt in recognition of our intrepid spirits! |
On we motored in 3.5 knots of wind until, just as we passed South Bramble, the strength rose to 12 knots & Karisma picked up her skirts as the sails finally filled & we sailed into the entrance of the Medina in sunshine! Once the three boats were tied up on the pontoon, the Ladies produced a splendid lunch with 'refreshments' which we all heartily enjoyed. Thank you.
Washing up done, come departure, the wind, as forecast was obligingly building from the SW & was now pushing the high teens. So off we set on a slightly broad reach. That, combined with the incoming tide gave us an ideal combination to try out the slipperiness of our new anti-fouling. Our speed built & our lady helm gave a positive squeal of delight as Karisma hit 9.5 kts surfing under Genoa alone.
All too soon we were at the entrance of the Hamble & a short while later we tied up at around 16:00 having had a very pleasant day out, with hardly a spot of rain, in, as far as I'm concerned, excellent company!
