The Royal Southern Yacht Club is delighted to welcome competitors to the J/80 World Championships 2017
Dates: 9th – 14th July 2017
The Royal Southern is a yacht racing club first and last. We have over 1,600 members owning 600+ boats. We are situated on the waterfront in Hamble village – renowned as the epicentre of world yacht racing.
Within 3 km of the club there are over 3,200 boats berthed in the river Hamble, plus many more dinghies and keelboats stored ashore.
This population supports an extensive yachting infrastructure which includes five commercial marinas, nine boat yards, five chandleries and four yacht clubs, plus hundreds of companies supplying equipment, sailmaking and technical services for all aspects of yacht racing and cruising.
The club was founded in 1837 and moved to Hamble in 1938, purchasing two 18th Century cottages, which remain our frontage onto the High Street and quay to this day. In 1998, the club purchased the adjacent boatyard and constructed our spectacular clubhouse, with its vaulted roof line, which fronts onto the river.
This was followed by the restoration of the listed cottages, to create administration offices on the ground floor and 12 modernised, en-suite bedrooms above.
Afloat we have walk-ashore berthing for 66 yachts, all fully serviced, while onshore we have workshops for the maintenance of the four J/80s owned by the club, our launches, tenders, buoys, ground tackle and our pontoons. We have on-site parking for 100 cars, along with our own permanent crane for all-tide launching.
