Now in its tenth year, the Motorboat Open Weekend is the highpoint of the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Motorboat Division UK programme.
It combines a unique mixture of waterborne competition, relaxed ambiance, good food and the chance for the crews to discover more about the Solent and their boats than they may have thought possible.
More than anything, it has a reputation as a friendly weekend for motorboating people. It is not about racing. Every motorboat stands an equal chance of winning the great selection of prizes, both modern and historic. There are three competitive elements, each of which bring trophies and points, which accrue towards an overall vessel score. |
| The Marina Marbella Poker Run, will start off the Hamble River mouth and end in the Medina River, with each vessel’s crew collecting 5 playing cards along the way from predetermined marks within the Solent. Poker hands will be played by vessel captains during the Saturday evening festivities. Finding the marks is the exciting bit. The cards are truly the luck of the draw. |
| The Swordsman Marine Predicted Log time over distance run, will test the skill of each crew in predicting the time their vessel will take to cover a predetermined course, but without the benefits of on-board timing. This will bring boats back to Hamble in time for tea and some relaxing downtime, before the evening festivities. |
The Seastart Solent Safari or waterborne treasure hunt, will test the observation of the crews and their abilities to understand and interpret the clues provided. This is less Times crossword and more Krypton Factor, but without the assault course!
Any motor vessel that can maintain an average of 10 knots or better is eligible, from a 20 metre cruiser to a 6 metre RIB, whose owners compete in the same competitions for the E.P.Barrus RIB Trophy and other goodies. |
The Southern Inter-Club Team Trophy competition has been introduced this year. The Club has brought one of its most famous trophies out of retirement and teams will compete for the WD & HO Wills cup, first awarded in 1962.
Any vessel may enter the Open Weekend competitions as an individual but now there is the added dimension of the Team Trophy, to be contested by teams of three vessels. These vessels may be of the same or different manufacture, from a single club, be it yacht club or owners club, and the points accrued by the three vessels over the three competitions will aggregate to the team score. |
