Motor Boating at Royal Southern Yacht Club
There is a vigorous motorboat division within the Club, which began in ground-breaking manner in 1905 with the running of its first motorboat race. Since 2005 and in the face of increasing commercial and leisure traffic in its home waters, the Club has restricted itself to motorboat rallies, but still has strong affiliations with powerboat competition. Its Members have raced throughout more than five decades with success and distinction, taking national and world championship honours.
That racing heritage had been maintained throughout the modern history of the Club, which hosted rounds of the Class I Offshore World and National championships, played a significant role in organising Cowes-Torquay race meetings since 1961, initiated and administered the inaugural Round Britain Marathon and provided organisers for the two subsequent editions. A Club Member currently holds both the Beaverbrook and British International Harmsworth Trophies, for victory in the 2011 Cowes-Torquay-Cowes International Offshore Powerboat Race.
Members own powered craft, classic and modern, between 6 metre RIBs and 60 metre motor yachts and the national calendar includes rallies in company in the Spring and Autumn, an Open Weekend in the Summer, its competition format containing tests of seamanship and seagoing knowledge. Launched in 2009 was an Inter-Club Team Trophy for teams of three vessels, of any size, with entries invited from other yacht clubs and owners associations and the social nature of this and all our weekends is legendary. Alongside it is the EP Barrus Trophy, exclusively for RIBS, but any individual may enter either competition and an annual dinner in December rounds out the year.
The Clay Pigeon Shooting society also falls within the purview of the Motorboat Division, catering for a very active section of our wider Club membership. Between these interest groups we hope that there is something to enthuse, encourage and stimulate our motor boat owning fraternity, year round and we warmly welcome new motor boating Members and hope that they may become involved.
