The Trustees have made their third round of awards to those who need financial support to achieve their goals, and look forward to continuing to make awards to encourage sailing.
In deciding which applications we could support we concentrated on those where our grant would make a major impact for the applicant's activity. We also looked for local connections or evidence of support from bodies such as RYA Sailability. Thus both Hamble Sea Scouts and Southampton Sea Cadets have received grants for sails and towards a new dinghy respectively and we have provided two bursaries for "Water Camp" places at YMCA Fairthorne Manor.
Three local young sailors were awarded grants to enter recognised championships at home or in Europe. One of them, Annabel Vose, is already in the Optimist National Squad and the top girl in the country. Another, Andrew Sinclair, has already won a European catamaran youth championship. We liked the way that the applicants help others as well, for instance by helping with Splash Club.
We were delighted to commit funds to Geoff Holt's Atlantic crossing campaign which he is planning as his next endeavour after sailing round Britain in his Challenger trimaran under the Club's burgee. Finally, we supported David Morse, a talented young disabled sailor training up for major events as part of the RYA programme.
