The 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race finished at Portsmouth on Monday, with another victory for the Royal Southern when member Chris Clayton and his crew brought his veteran offshore racing powerboat Gee, home to win the Historic Class.
|
Built originally in the 1960's by WA Souter of Cowes, Gee took part in many offshore races including the 1969 Round Britain Race, which was then run by the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
Chris Clayton acquired Gee four years ago and upgraded the boat to include the installation of two Cummins Mercruiser Diesel QSB 5.9 litre, 380hp turbo-diesel engines earlier this year, in order to participate in the 1400 nautical mile offshore marathon round Britain.
Gee's elapsed time was 34 hours, 17 minutes and 21 seconds. A jubilant Chris Clayton said: "Finishing this race is a bit like climbing a mountain.
We don't quite know where to look now for the next challenge but this has been an incredibly intense three months of team effort to achieve an incredible result."
