2008 Level Racing Championships - 26th & 27th July
Report & Images: Eddie Mays
With the disappearance of the IRM Rating system over the yachting horizon at the end of 2007 the demand for level racing by the 'big boats' has remained a significant factor for the 52' and 45' boats in the Solent. In response to this the Royal Southern Y.C. organised a two-day championship that was held over the last weekend of July. On reflection it was perhaps an event too far. With Cork Week only just gone and Skandia Cowes Week a few days ahead only five Farr 45s reached the start line on Saturday morning. This was a shame as the weekend provided a real feast of close racing.

Entries for the Royal Southern's popular Mid-summer regatta were being received up to the late on Friday evening.
Besides the main regatta the weekend's racing including both the Hunter 707 Southern Area Championships and the first of the J-109 Saturday series.
Saturday's weather did not reflect the fact that it was mid-summer's eve. The sky was overcast and the wind drifted from Southwest to Southerly during the day and it was only during the final set of races that it became reasonably stable.
