A very warm welcome to the Royal Southern Yacht Club's 2008 Racing Programme.

Here on the Racing home page you will find links to the latest news, results and files.
We could not host these events without the expertise and support of our volunteer members and staff, both afloat and ashore, so I take this opportunity to thank them all.

I wish you all fair winds and enjoyable sailing in 2008.

Notes from the PRO about WOKC classes and guide ratings
How did we choose the classes and the guidance on rating? Well, here's the background.
WOKC is a new event for which the scale of demand is yet to be proved. There is a great deal of enthusiasm and interest so we are optimistic, but at this stage entries are only just beginning to come in.
We want to provide the best racing we can.
IRC racing with too wide a rating spread is unsatisfactory for the participants. For example, fair racing is almost impossible in tidal waters because the tide has so much greater impact on the VMG of the lower rated boats. Boats can be too far apart to know how they are doing and may experience significantly different conditions. When they are close together big boats can physically dominate small ones.
At this stage we have no real idea whether the event will attract 15 or 30 or 60 entries or whatever. Naturally the more there are, the more practical it will be to divide entries into suitable classes.
Before settling the Notice of Race and other notes, we sought and got lots of very helpful feedback from the initial publicity during the winter. That feedback led us clearly to the classes and guide rating band that were put forward. The aim is to help people understand what is likely to be possible and to produce good racing, whilst not closing the door if enough others were to appear.
Some other entries are being put together by people who are not going to sail on their regular boats, so that they can fit into the guide rating band.
A couple of other sample situations: we have indicated to owners with a rating of 0.767 that it is unlikely that we could provide satisfactory racing for them or for other boats that they were racing against. Their rating is 0.133 below the lower guide figure, 0.228 below the middle of the guide band, so the difficulty is obvious.
Another team has a boat rating 1.118 which is 0.028 above the top of the guide band, whilst 0.123 above the middle of the guide band. We have said that if we get several other boats close to the upper guide figure, then we should be able to provide satisfactory racing for her and them.
The SBR Sportsboat class was chosen to allow various different sportsboats to enter. The early feedback showed that there was no unanimity about a single class, but that various types would enter. It was clear to us that if we use SBR ratings then they could get good racing together. There is a cost for boats that don't already have an SBR rating certificate, but with the special deal we have arranged with the Rating Office this is limited to about £35 for an 8m boat, covering to the end of 2008. Of course, if there are enough entries to provide both a one-design class and a viable mixed SBR class, that would be great.
If you want to enter but your boat doesn't fit the guidelines, do get in touch so we can see if there is a way forward to get you on the water.
Remember the aims are good racing and fun!
