A very warm welcome to the Royal Southern Yacht Club's 2008 Racing Programme.

Here on the Racing home page you will find links to the latest news, results and files.
We could not host these events without the expertise and support of our volunteer members and staff, both afloat and ashore, so I take this opportunity to thank them all.

I wish you all fair winds and enjoyable sailing in 2008.

2008 Level Racing Championships - 26th & 27th July
Report & Images: Eddie Mays
With the disappearance of the IRM Rating system over the yachting horizon at the end of 2007 the demand for level racing by the 'big boats' has remained a significant factor for the 52' and 45' boats in the Solent. In response to this the Royal Southern Y.C. organised a two-day championship that was held over the last weekend of July. On reflection it was perhaps an event too far. With Cork Week only just gone and Skandia Cowes Week a few days ahead only five Farr 45s reached the start line on Saturday morning. This was a shame as the weekend provided a real feast of close racing.
After a short delay P.R.O. Peter Bateson set the fleet a short windward / leeward course in a light breeze. Shaun Frohlich (R.Srn.Y.C.) onboard 'Exabyte 4' made the best of the conditions to win ahead of 'Alice II' (Simon & Mike Henning). There was a further delay after this race to allow the sea breeze to come up the Needles Channel and once it arrived it strengthened slowly to reach 12 - 15 kts by mid-afternoon.
With the breeze building the course was lengthened for the next three races. Race 2 and all five boats arrived at the top mark bow to stern, which was unfortunate for 'Rebel' (Stewart Whitehead) as 'Freddie Freeloader' (Eamonn O'Nolan) shut the door on her. There was a coming together. 'Rebel's' spinnaker pole was broken and at the Protest hearing on Saturday evening they lost their case and were disqualified from the race. 'Alice II' was leading downwind but mistook the location of the leeward mark and overstood it badly allowing 'Exabyte 4' to round first and take a lead that she kept to the finish.
Hasty repair work by the crew on 'Rebel' meant that they were able to use their spinnaker pole in Race 3. 'Exabyte 4' was the early leader but 'Alice II' took the better line downwind and gained the inside position at the bottom mark. The 2nd beat offered less tactical options and everyone stayed on port tack until they hit the starboard layline. By the end of lap 2 'Alice II' had extended her lead slightly. On the short beat to the finish line 'Freddie Freeloader' made startling progress and almost pipped 'Werewolf' (Jerry Otter) for 3rd place.
In the final race of the day 'Rebel' was the only boat to stay on starboard tack and when she came across for the mark she was able to tack just in front of 'Alice II' and leebow her way to round first. On the run back the crew didn't risk their damaged spinnaker pole and by good teamwork were able to extend this lead slightly at the end of the first lap. However on the 2nd lap 'Alice II' made up the gap and recorded her 2nd consecutive win and a share of the overnight lead with 'Exabyte 4'.
Sunday morning stretched into the early afternoon before there was enough breeze to race. In the first race of the day the wind kept moving to the right and the buoy-layers were left trying to keep up with this movement. 'Exabyte 4' managed to finish but the others had to kedge for a short time before the wind came in again. 'Alice II' made the finish line but touched the mark and retired. The breeze settled in the West at 8 - 10 kts and allowed a fair final race. 'Exabyte 4' took control of the race early on and held off 'Alice II' to the line and this was the final order overall.
