Americas Cup Sailors, Olympic Medallists and World Champions compete at the Royal Southern
The Solent delivered three days of champagne sailing for the second UK leg of the European Grand Prix. Hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club and supported by Ronstan the skiff fleet sailed a 10 race series in winds ranging from 12 to 22 knots. Sailing north of Hill Head buoy the wind, current and waves served up superb conditions to test the teams and provide plenty of spectacular action for the photographers and spectators!

Racing was dominated by the team of Rob Greenhalgh, Simon Hiscocks and Peter Greenhalgh whose otherwise perfect score line was only interrupted by a second in race two when the crew were unceremoniously dunked when their trapeze lines failed. Showing impressive downwind pace, the Holt/Selden/RMW team seem well on their way with their preparations for the 2009 World Championship in next June in Carnac, France.
|
Leading the chase of the leaders were the Investec Private Bank team of Mason Woodworth, David Brown and Simon Hamilton and the Pindar team with Andy Richards, Andrew Fairley and Dave Richards. Investec eventually taking second place on count back after a strong performance in the big breeze of the final day.
GP Covers sailed by Flemming Clausen, Tom Parkington and Soren Clausen took the prize for top continental team in fourth. While Ronstan UK also showed strong performance but ended up 5th when a bowsprit failure in race 1 forced them to eat some alphabet soup for races 1 and 2 until they could fit a spare.
|
Day 1
Starting at 1300 with almost slack tide, the 15 knot south westerly sea breeze created ideal racing conditions at the upper end of the big rig. Race 1 got off on a slightly pin biased line with most teams heading out left opting to grab the last of the ebb tide in the north channel. Investec lead around the first mark but was quickly overhauled downwind by Holt and Pindar with Ronstan UK also on a charge. At the leeward mark, Holt had pulled out and impressive lead that the would not relinquish followed by Pindar. Ronstan UK put in their last gybe just about to overtake Investec when their bowsprit folded. A snagged spinnaker halyard saw Investec sail past the leeward mark leaving Pica to round inside and take third.
In race two the fleet were again tightly spaced. With Pindar, Pica and GP covers again chasing a speedy Holt around each leeward mark. Up the final beat, on the second to last tack, Holt went for an unscheduled swim when their trapeze lines broke leaving Pindar to take up the lead. The Holt team were able to scramble back on board in time to hold off Pica and maintain second on the run to the finish.
Race 3 saw the return of Ronstan UK, with a replacement bowsprit, who showed the pace they used to win the European Championship to push Holt throughout the race. In the end, it was not enough, although the team finished off their day with a rewarding second. Sadly pica while holding fourth saw their rig come crashing down after jumping a wave putting them out of contention.
|
Day 2
Day 2 brought more perfect sea breeze conditions with the wind averaging 16 knots gusting 20. With four races on tap, both the equipment and endurance of all teams were tested to the breaking point. The Holt team again showed impressive downwind pace to lead at all but 1 leeward mark.
Race 1 saw Ronstan UK again jump out of the blocks, but the holt team again took the lead on the first run. GP Covers pulled up third in front of the ever consistent Pindar.
Race 2 of the day, the Investec team led off the pin favoured line rounding with first weather mark with a sizeable lead. They managed to hold off the hard charging Holt team only to see them sail past shortly after when a they could not get their spinnaker completely down.
Race 4 was a shear test of endurance after already sailing 24 miles, the final three laps pushed the teams to the limit. Holt sailed out to an early lead but GP Covers put in their best finish of the event to push them hard to the finish. Ronstan UK also kept up their return of form with a solid third.
|
Day 3
With winds over 20 knots forecast, all teams opted for the number two rigs. Although the breeze on the course was less, the southeast wind against the outgoing tide made for very challenging conditions and some fantastic wave jumping!
On the little rigs Holt and Investec proved too speedy upwind for the rest of the fleet, racing off to first and second place finishes. Pindar used their superb off wind pace to stay close and battled with Ronstan UK and Pica for third place honours. In the end however all teams finished the event smiling with the best conditions of the week not in the least due to the screaming reach against the tide back up Southampton Water to Hamble Point.
|
European and UK Grand Prix: (after 4 events of 5)
After 4 events, Pindar now lead the European Grand Prix on 54 points with European Champions Ronstan UK close behind on 49 points. These two teams will fight it out for the title of European Grand Prix Champion at the final event on Lake Como, Italy over September 19th to 21st. Third place for the grand prix will be hard fought between Investec, Pica and GP Covers on 38, 35 and 33 points respectively.
Investec Private Bank lead the UK Grand Prix with 36 Points while Holt/RMW on 25 points have jumped ahead of Ronstan UK by 1 point. With the bonus point scoring system in place and a extra 5 points on offer for first place at an event, any one of these three teams could win the championship at the final grand prix on September 27th and 28th at Hayling Island.
