Racing At The Royal Southern Yacht Club
The Royal Southern Yacht Club is committed to sail racing, both traditional and cutting edge. The core programme is based upon four Summer Series Regattas, offering competitive racing for IRC classes, White Sail Club Class, Sports Boat and Keel Boat classes. In addition, the Club regularly hosts X-Yachts, Laser SB.3s, First 40.7s, J.80/109/111s, Contessa 32's, Swallows, Oyster Week, Farr 45's, the Beneteau Cup, Sigma 33's, the Women's Open Keelboat Championship, XODs and other One-Design classes. These individual regattas are supplemented by a 3-race Passage Series, for IRC and Club Class boats, a 5-race series for Cruisers and a busy programme for Academy and Youth sailing, including Splash Week.
The Club's Anniversary year will feature an inclusive gathering of racing classes, in a major 175 Open Regatta in the Solent, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, supported by Mount Gay Rum, Gaastra and Swarovski Optik. This festival, from 26 May-10 June, covering Whitsun and Jubilee public holidays, will showcase the Royal Southern's expertise in running big sailing events and will include the 50th. running of the Cowes-Deauville Race. Initiated by the Club in 1962, the Cowes-Deauville event is open to IRC classes, White Sail Club Classes, rallying cruisers and motor boaters, is run in conjunction with the Deauville Yacht Club and Royal London Yacht Club and is on both the Royal Ocean Racing Club, Junior Offshore Group and Union Nationale pour la Course au Large Championnat Manche calendars in 2012.
This year will also see the Brewin Dolphin British Open Metre Regatta in June for 12, 8 and 6 Metre class yachts and in September, the Club will run its inaugural Biscay 2012 offshore race, from Hamble-La Rochelle-Brest-Hamble.
