Annabel Vose wins second at Musto Volvo Optimist National Championships and Best Girl Trophy
A record entry of 447 young sailors competed in the Volvo Musto Optimist Nationals, in Pwhelli, North Wales. The same week out in Beijing many Olympic races were being postponed due to the lack of wind but the young Optimist sailors faced the opposite problem with big sea swells and gusts of up to 35 knots.
Annabel Vose from the Royal Southern Yacht Club tackled the tricky weather conditions brilliantly throughout the week, eventually coming second by only 2 points, and winning the "Best Girl" trophy. Hampshire sailors won all 3 top places, with Matt Wallis from Spinnaker Sailing Club winning and Craig Dibb from Warsash coming third.
Despite feeling the pressure of an unlucky first day when a rescue situation on the race course cost Annabel 20 places, she continued to perform throughout the week, scoring an amazing 3 firsts on a truly "magic Thursday": an incredible feat in a such a large fleet.
Begining to follow in Annabelle amazing footsteps, 4 more Splashers were competing in the Junior and Regatta fleets (Benjamin Waha, Joshua Waha, Conor Whelan, Annabel Whelan). All gained invaluable experience sailing in huge waves and large fleets.
Events like the Volvo Musto Championships encourage young sailors to compete and get involved in a racing environment; this can only help create great sailors for the future of the Southern.
