The Optimist Spring Championships were held last weekend in Weymouth at the location for the 2012 Olympics.
This is the first major event of the season. Around 170 young sailors took part divided into Gold and Silver fleets. It was a glorious sunny weekend with light 5-7knot breezes. The shifty conditions were challenging for the sailors.
There were 4 Royal Southern entries including Max and Sally Clapp who were participating in their first major GBR event. Max Clapp finished 15th in the Silver fleet and was rewarded with the trophy for the highest placed non squad sailor.
Max recorded a 2nd and 8th place in the 6 race series, an impressive performance against the older sailors and is now fired up to attend the Nationals in Largs this summer.
Ben Waha finished 9th in the Silver fleet with a 3rd and 4th as his best races.
Annabel Vose won top girl in the Gold fleet, finishing 4th overall with 2 first places on the Saturday.
The Optimist Inland Championships will be held in Grafham Water 16/17th May so lets hope we can see even more Royal Southern Entries.
