The UK Optimist World and European Selection trials were won by Annabel Vose.
Annabel proved sailed very consistently throughout the 6 day event finishing on 59 points, 18 points ahead of Josh Sparks in second place. She is only the second girl to ever win this event. The 16 race series was held over two long weekends at Pwllehli, North Wales, and then the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy; the location of the 2012 Olympics.
The UK’s top 86 Optimist sailors were invited to the regatta, with the first 5 sailors qualifying for the GBR Worlds team. Sailing at Weymouth took place out in the Bay in 12 -15 knots of breeze and an awkward choppy sea. The testing Worlds race course included two 1 mile upwind legs and with a 1 ½ hour sail back to Portland at the end of each days sailing it was a tough series.
Annabel will now represent Great Britain at the International Optimist World Championships in Rio, Brazil in August later this year.
