This year the club saw 105 Splashers and 24 Junior Cadets/Junior Academy teens enjoy the 30th Royal Southern Splash Week. We were blessed with the weather, although perhaps a little too much wind on day three, however despite that the sun shone on us all week and everyone had a fantastic time!
The leaders who run the groups are all volunteers, and without them Splash Week certainly would not happen. They were supported by a fantastic group of Dinghy Instructors and Senior Instructors, a lot of whom return year after year. These instructors say that splash Week is a great way for them to spend their last coaching week of the summer as it is such a unique family centred week.
This year lots of the groups went abroad! The Hawks sailed to Cowes in an epic one hour 38 minutes in their oppies, hiking most of the way! Once there, they had fish and chips and an ice cream on the front before ringo-ing home! They even brought back a stick of rock for the Beach Master. Meanwhile the Piranhas and Eagles sailed to Calshot and received a guided tour of the lifeboat station. The Sharks, in turn, then bravely sailed over to Calshot and had a look at the Velodrome (whilst still in wetsuits!). The Terrapins even made it to Warsash to meet the Harbour Masters budgie, Tinkerbell!
Those that didn’t set off on epic adventures to foreign waters explored Hamble’s creaks and the beach further up the Hamble River - all while learning to row, sail, and have fun on the water!
We run an exciting program of off-water events too, ensuring no one has 5 minutes to get bored! The wacky races saw most of the leaders having wet sponges hurled at them and we also ran our annual crabbing competition, this year seeing a spider crab hauled out of the PPYH! Thanks to the few local members who let us use their swimming pools, everyone got to relax when off the water bobbing around in these.
Splash is grateful to Chris Hoyle who organised the Tugboat Challenge again this year. We were met at Fawley deep by one of the tugs who then discharged their fire hoses onto our RIBs, who drive underneath them! It’s a salty cold shower that sounds horrendous, but the children (and some adults) love it!
All in all a success full year and, on a personal note, thank you to everyone who came along, got wet, joined in, sailed, capsized, swam, had fun and helped build amazing memories. Without all of your enthusiasm splash wouldn’t have made it to 30 years!
To celebrate this auspicious year, we will be holding a ball on 19th October 2019. This will be a black-tie event and promises to be a fantastic evening! We have Steven Simmons, a magician in the magic circle, and an amazing 8-piece band called the Delorians. Tickets are priced at £65 a head.
I look forward to seeing you there!
