Junior Laying-Up Talk and Disco
On November 13th, the junior section of the Club met up to celebrate the end of a long and successful season on the water. This took the form of a talk by local Olympian Chris Grube, who talked about his pathway to becoming a double Olympian and what it is like competing at the Olympics. We had a great turnout of over 50 junior members for Chris’s talk and some great questions (including Chris getting a very detailed grilling from Millie Barber, one of our 2021 Shrimps!).
Following the talk, we packed away the chairs and the juniors enjoyed a great disco with DJ Teddy, who played some great cheesy tunes which got everyone on the dance floor (including some suspiciously mature junior sailors!). A great night was had by all, and many thanks to the staff for all their hard work making it a great evening!
The junior section of the club has been extremely active this year, ranging from our youngest sailors taking their first steps into sailing at May half term and during Splash Week to several of our club members representing GBR overseas in Optimists (Will Fletcher and Hennie Burlton, 420’s (Gabby Burlton), and 29’ers (Oscar Morgan-Harris) this summer. Everyone has spent a lot of time having fun on the water this summer following lockdown, with many adventures both in the river and beyond, including sailaways to the New Forest and Wootton Creek on the Isle of Wight at Splash Week.
Those who enjoy racing have had some fantastic results, and it has also been fun to beat our neighbours - well done Lauren Barber for winning the Hamble River SC Optimist regatta and Will Fletcher for winning the Warsash SC Optimist regatta earlier in the summer! We have a number of Optimist sailors who have been selected for the South RYA Regional Training Group - Joe and Sam Armstrong-Rowland, Ruby Callaghan, Thomas Saunders, Will, Isla and Hugo Fletcher and Alex Saunders. Well done all!
Some of our hardier sailors are still training through the winter, and our next Hamble River Optimist training session (with a special festive edition and lots of fun planned) is being held on 18th - 19th December and we have a few spaces available, please book through the following link if you’d like to join us. https://webcollect.org.uk/hrowt/event/2021-22-river-hamble-optimist-winter-training
Here’s hoping 2022 will be another great year for junior sailing! If you’d like to help, we’d be grateful for parental support to plan and run events, so please do get in touch with the Splash Committee through the Splash section of the club website or the Sailing Office - no experience necessary, enthusiasm essential! Dates for Splash Week 2022 are Sunday 21st to Friday 26th August.
