Watch the action back on our eSailing Winter Series Youtube playlist:
Thursday evening saw 14 sailors competing in the first of the Royal Southern eSailing Winter Series. Racing commenced with the fleet out in the 49er class, with three boats coming back due to being premature at the start, the fleet was led round the top mark by Skippafire. He then led round every other mark and took the race win from Isswizz. Race 2 saw the fleet move into the Laser class, Skippafire fought for the pin end and would have led off the line, but was moments too early. The fleet enjoyed a challenging first beat with 4 lead changes, Woodwind 5 led round the top mark and managed to hold off Isswizz and TakeFive for the win.
Race 3 was the first time in the multihulls for the fleet with the Nacra 17. For the first time the start line was all clear Marcelsailor held off Woodwind 5 and Emrob round the top mark. The rest of the fleet closely following behind leading to a chaotic top mark with a third of the fleet getting penalties! With some interesting wind shifts, the lead changed on the second up with with Minifletch taking the charge to Marcelsailor, however he fended this off to take the win ahead of Woodwind 5 and Skippafire crept into third with a great downwind in the bigger breeze.
Race 4 went into the Star, one of the tricker fleets downwind due to the wind shadows. See Ya was early off the line (under half a second) and the fleet got away with the pin end group of Skippafire, Fingo, Woodwind 5 and King F leading the standings. Woodwind 5 and Cogital led round the top mark with Skippafire sneaking in on port just behind them. At the spreader mark Cogital caught the mark and the following penalty gave Woodwind 5 the opportunity to pull away from the fleet for the rest of the race. With 8 penalties across the fleet on the last downwind showed how much the positions change in one leg.
Race 5 is back to the multihulls with the Formula 18. TakeFive and Martin Banbury were both early, and had to come back, there seemed to be 5 or 6 different leaders up the beat, with Minifletch and Marcelsailor getting to the top mark together. Marcelsailor took the penalty and Minifletch sailed away from the fleet never to be caught.
Race 6 was in the J70, a popular boat for e-sailors and there was a clean start. Ed11 took the lead up the beat, holding off Minifletch. Some of the earlier podium placers struggled in these boats with Woodwind 5 and Skippafire well down the fleet. Ed11 lead down the final downwind with Minifletch and Emrob unable to catch up.
Third place for the evening went to Isswizz, with Skippafire in 2nd and Woodwind 5 winning by 1 point. The racing was incredibly close with 5 different winners over the 6 races.
Racing continues next Thursday with the same format and entries close at 1700 on the day.
