Gearing Up for the 2021 Season

What we're doing to get ready for a great 2021 sailing season

Mar 25, 2021

Race Kit

The largest racing investment to take place over the Winter has been the purchase of 7 brand new race marks from Seaflex. This brings our collection of marks to 22 total, giving us more flexibility for events and allowing us to run up to 3 full race courses at any one time. On top of this, we are removing old branding and rebranding all new and old marks with the Royal Southern burgee and logo, so you know you're at the right mark when you find it!
As well as refreshing our collection of race marks, we have had our 2 old start boat hooter boxes rejuvenated and two new ones made specially for us by member Keith Sammons and his company KSail. This will mean that we can have reliable sound signals on up to 4 committee vessels at a time, including finish boats or RIBs.
All of this extra equipment will ensure that we can properly resource high-calibre events, such as the J Cup, alongside smaller club activity, and always be giving our volunteers the right tools to give competitors the best experience possible.

Race Management

With sailing on the horizon, we have been putting together our amazing race teams for the season and we would love for you to get involved! This year we are running over 30 racing events, and we can't do it without our amazing teams who come out in the rain or sunshine to put on some top quality racing.
Join us to get the best view of competitive racing on the Solent, meet like-minded people and learn a bit too. If that's not enough, you'll also get breakfast, lunch and post-racing drinks during the regatta and an invite to the Annual Prize Giving on 30th October, with a cost-price ticket for those volunteering for 4 or more major regattas.

Crew Network

After taking on some feedback from users, we have re-launched the website Crew Register as a newly revived 'Crew Network' consisting of an online database of boats and sailors, coupled with a WhatsApp group for direct advertising and communications.
The new online database provides boat owners and sailors with a simple platform for finding each other and the new Whatsapp group is perfect for last minute crew calls, as we can't plan for everything!

J/70 Charter

The 2020 season was short but turbulent, and highlighted some potential gaps in our J/70 charter process. Taking this as a learning opportunity (which seems to be the theme of the year), we have regrouped, assessed our options and added some steps.
We are now working with member Adam Munday and AM Marine to streamline the J/70 checking and maintenance system to ensure that our three boats are always in race-ready condition. On top of this, over the winter Adam and has team have checked and replaced sheets, carried out gelcoat repairs, replaced the hull graphics and ensured all blocks, shackles and systems are in top condition. Thanks to this work, we are confident that the boats will not disappoint charterers and we can track, attribute and repair damage accurately and efficiently.
Organise a charter by contacting Emily in the Sailing Office on sailing@royal-southern.co.uk or find out out more: https://www.royal-southern.co.uk/sailing/club-j-70s
