Junior Winter Sailing

The oppies and Fevas have been out enjoying the Winter conditions, making the most of even the last weekend before Christmas.

Dec 30, 2020
Ahead of Christmas the junior members of the club were out enjoying the balmy conditions, with Oppy and Feva sailing taking place, and a mini Christmas regatta held by the Optimists following their training weekend on the 19/20 December.
The pre Christmas weekend was much warmer than the previous oppy training session, and the weather was lovely on Sunday with light winds and sun (a combination which has been in somewhat short supply for junior sailing this year). We had a great turnout of 25 oppy sailors from all of the River Hamble clubs and everyone had a fun time on the water. The sailors divided into two groups, the more experienced racers focussing on starts with Chay and Megan and the less experienced sailors being introduced to the excitement of box starts and working on their upwind sailing with Adele and Will.
There was a fantastic improvement in everyone’s sailing over the two days, so well done to all the sailors. On the Sunday, the theme was festive, and everyone proved that an oppy definitely goes faster when festooned with tinsel. There were some great Christmas decorations, we were particularly impressed by those sailors who replaced their burgees with Christmas trees - this perhaps made them less effective at spotting shifts, but significantly more festive!
At the end of the weekend all the groups joined together on the water for a mini festive regatta (with a guest appearance from the older Oppy sailors too). This was won by Hugo Fletcher (who sailed extremely quickly considering he had a boat full of tinsel!) with Rory Armstrong and Thomas Saunders taking the other podium places. The sought after boat decoration prizes went to Megan Cerrato and Alex Saunders. Well done to the younger group who took the majority of top ten places, they were just too quick for the older sailors to catch!
The next Optimist winter training session is scheduled for the weekend of 16th and 17th January and we hope this will be possible - we are monitoring the RYA Covid guidance closely.
The Feva’s have also been out training with James and Jessie and had a great session on December 20th, also enjoying the lovely weather!
We want to focus on getting as many junior members out on the water as possible in 2021, so if you are interested in being involved in junior sailing at the club, please do let the Sailing Office know, and they will put you in touch with us. No skills required, but enthusiasm is essential!
