The Royal Southern Yacht Club Salcombe Gin July Regatta attracted 70 teams to the prestigious yacht club on the banks of the River Hamble. With no racing possible due to a lack of wind on the first day, competitors and club members enjoyed a complimentary cocktail from the Salcombe Distillery Co. and a sumptuous barbeque prepared by the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
Winners were decided with a ‘penalty shoot-out’ on the final day in unpredictable breeze. It was a day for heads out of the boat. Spotting and reacting to the ever changing conditions were the recipe to success. Congratulations to all of the class winners. The Prize Giving was held on Den’s Deck, Royal Southern YC, Rear Commodore Sailing Paul Ward commented: “Well done to all of the regatta winners and also to the Race Team for providing racing in very unstable weather conditions. The Royal Southern Summer Series has seen a great turn out for the three regattas that have taken place so far. We already have over 50 entries for the final regatta in September, supported by Land Union. A big thank you to Salcombe Gin and Harken for their generous support, which has been well received by all the competitors.”
HP30 CLASS
Competition is red hot in the pocket rocket HP30 Class with three different regatta winners for the RSrnYC Summer Series. Jerry Hill & Richie Faulkner’s Farr 280 Moral Compass scored three second place race scores to win the class for the Salcombe Gin July Regatta. Jonathan Powell’s Farr 280 Peggy scored a sixth in the first race, but came back to win the next two and finished the regatta in second place. Glyn Locke’s Farr 280 Toucan scored a race win, but finished third after countback.
“In general, we started quite well, and we were consistent,” summed up Moral Compass’ driver Jerry Hill. “The crew did a fantastic job; the manoeuvres went very well. The boat went very quickly, and we put her in the right place. It was all a bit nip and tuck with Toucan in the last race. I did make a bit of a ‘Horlicks’ at the start, but we dug in and got back into it. I think the fleet is evenly matched and we are having a lot of fun and enjoying it.”
A special mention to the youngest crewmember at the Salcombe July Regatta; Caedon Faulkner-Leask, who was calling dynamic trim on Moral Compass, under the expert guidance of father, Richie Faulkner.
IRC ONE
Tony and Sally Mack’s J/111 McFly seemed unstoppable in the big boat class winning the first two races held in light airs. However, as the breeze built for the final race Cornel Riklin’s J/111 Jitterbug scored as bullet to blot McFly’s copy book. McFly won the class, and Jitterbug’s final flurry put them level on points with Chris Jones & Louise Makin’s J/111 JourneyMaker II. Jitterbug was second for the regatta after countback.
IRC TWO
Mike Moxley’s HOD35 Malice scored two race victories to win the class by five points from Johnny Cooper’s J/112E Jooped. Mike Bridges’ JPK 10.10 Elaine Again placed second in the last race to finish the regatta as class runner up. Team Knight Build on J/112E Happy Daize was just a point off the podium in fourth
IRC THREE
Ian Handley & Tim James’ Mustang 30 Gr8 Banter scored their second regatta win of the Summer Series. Gr8 Banter scored two race victories in the regatta to win the class. Olly and Sam Love’s SJ320 Frank3 won the final race to clinch class runner up, ahead of Becky Walford’s J/92 Brenda’s J.
White Group – CRO Tom Rusbridge
J/70 CLASS
The J/70 Class was competing for a double-header; the J/70 Sprint Series and a world championship qualifier in the J/70 UK Grand Slam Series. Nick Phillips’ Chaotic scored four podium finishes in the 16-boat fleet to win the class. The team from Parkstone Yacht Club showed astute awareness in the fickle breeze. Martin Dent’s Jelvis scored a third and first in the final two races, to once again finish runner-up. Charles Thompson’s Brutus II won the final race to take third in class above Doug Struth’s DSP.
SB20 CLASS
The Whelan family will be celebrating with father and son finishing first and second respectively in the SB20 Class. Charles Whelan’s Breaking Bod scored four bullets to win the class. Patrick Whelan’s young team, racing Sportboatworld Youth Racing, scored all podium results to finish second. Adrian Padro’s espíritu oceanio made the trip down from the Shustoke Sailing Club in Birmingham, and finished third.
XOD CLASS
Peter Baines XOD Felix has won three regattas in a row. For the Salcombe Gin July Regatta, Felix scored straight bullets to win the class by five points from Gary Rossall’s Little X. Andy Hamlett’s Satu scored all podium results to finish in third.
Club Class
Jonty Sherwill’s Cockleshell was the winner of the Club Class – VPRS. The one-off day boat was built by Jonty’s Grandfather AJ Barber in Guernsey in 1925. Toby the dog is 14 years old and only started sailing last year, but he is already a tactical genius!
Younger Members Summer Points Series
New for this year, the Younger Members Summer Points Series rewards younger members regardless of what boat or class they were. After a varied day on the water, the final results were:

- Will & Bridget Tahourdin in Jedi
- Emily Dresser in Lady Penrose
The final regatta of the 2021 Royal Southern Yacht Club Summer Series will be the Land Union September Regatta (18-19 September). The regatta will feature a much-anticipated Oktoberfest onshore, generous prizes from Land Union and regatta support from North Sails once again. As the final even of the series, class winners for a highly competitive series will also be announced.
