Splash Week is now full
Welcome to Splash Week 2018 from the 27th to the 31st of August
Dear Splashers, Splash parents and Splash grandparents and all Pirates out there,
Welcome to our new Splash week page. Hopefully within this you will find all you need to know about Splash week 2018.
It will be updated on a regular basis and so please keep checking it to see any changes that might affect you or your children, grandchildren in the buildup to Splash week. The 2018 programes will be available shortly.
I am delighted and excited to be taking over as Splash Leader for this year. No one quite warned me how much work goes on behind the scenes for a week such as this. It makes me realise how lucky we are to be part of a great organisation to be able to do this year on year.
The format of Splash week evolves but never really changes from the fundamental purpose of having fun on the water with good friends new and old.
We hope that all the children from age 4 to 18 leave the week having learnt more about rowing, swimming, sailing, racing and boats than they knew at the beginning but more importantly that they have had good fun and leave wanting to return next year.
The 4-12 year olds will take part in Splash Week and the 13-18 year olds in Junior Cadets.
You will see on following pages the breakdown of the groups and what is expected within each group. You may notice an additional group at the older end of the age range. This is are Swallows and Amazon's group who already know how to sail well but are keen to develop their navigational and seamanship rather than just racing.
The tides this year mean that it will be an early start each day but hopefully it will give us long afternoons in the sunshine having returned safely after a morning on the water.
To this end I am planning and hoping that everyone will arrive on the Sunday and we can arrange the car park during the afternoon.
I look forward to seeing you all in the summer
Adam and Rosie
About Splash Week and the Membership Requirement
About Splash Week
The JC Week starts on Saturday 25th August with the JC's competing in J80's for the Under 21 Cup on the Sunday.
The Splashers join the fun on Sunday 26th August with 5 days of sailing and activities.
All ages, from Grandparents down to the 4 year olds, join in to ensure that through a week's fun on the water the children all gain more confidence and ability.
All children do need to be accompanied by a responsible adult who is happy to take part.
It is a busy, hectic, colourful, fun week with lots of adventures all based around the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the surrounding waters of the Hamble River.
Youth week and our monthly youth sailing events are open to children and young people (age 4-18) of Members and guests of Members.
The Membership Requirement
All participants in the Junior Cadet or Splash events must for insurance purposes be members of the club.
Participants who are Family Members of the Club are already covered.
Adults: A week's temporary Membership is available for adults at a cost of £200.00 (or if grandparents are members, £50/adult) and the completion of the Temporary Member Form downloadable below.
Calling All Parents & Boats - Skills We Need
YOU are essential to making Splash days work, the more you contribute the more you will enjoy Splash.
We always need more parents / helpers together with any available rescue boats (usually ribs) to make Splash a success.
Safety Or Escort Boats
Parents bring your own boats Ribs, dory's, dinghies with outboard engines and drivers so long as they have a working kill cord. Please register it on the registration form so we know how many rescue boats we have.
Skills We Need
Parents and helpers with dinghy sailing teaching qualifications and with dinghy sailing experience please step forward.
Powerboat driving skills - experience driving ribs/dories and especially powerboat level II and safety boat qualifications.
Rowing skills - valuable for Shrimps - Children's entertainment experience (or vocation) - First aid skills (nurses/doctors) - please let us know.
The best way for a child to learn to sail is to be in command of an Optimist sailing dinghy.
We have a few RSrnYC Oppies together with some that have been kindly lent to us by Warsash sailing club available for the week. The use of these Club boats are available for new Splashers to use whilst deciding if sailing is for them.
Children who have attended one or more Splash Weeks would be expected to provide their own boats.
Children cannot sail in Minnows group or above unless they have their own boat. We do find that children learn better if they have their own boat, while for complete beginners it is fun to share a boat.
We anticipate demand for the rental Oppies to be high. If you would be interested in your child having one of these boats we will do our best to arrange this but they may need to share, please register your interest on the application form. There will be a charge of £50.00 per child per week for a place/share in/of one of these Oppies.
If you are looking for a second hand optimist for your child, then a good place to start is the Oppie home page on www.optimistsailing.org.uk or ask other parents at Splash meetings.
JC's sail Feva's, Lasers and J70's during the week. We have 2 club Fevas and have managed to rent three further boats.
As with Splash, any JC who turns up without a boat of their own will be expected to pay the £50 boat rental charge to contribute to the hire costs.
Registration this year has now closed as Splash Week is full.
