Boat Hire
The Royal Southern has three J/70 sportsboats available to charter, as well as two RS Fevas and 8 Optimists.
The J/70
The UK J/70 fleet is the largest one design fleet racing regularly on the Solent, with 35+ boats at the Class Nationals each year. The sportsboat is a 4-5 man One Design class making for some of the closest racing on the Solent and provides a full and intense calendar with events from March through to as late as October/November. With the 2020 J/70 National Championships being held at the Royal Southern, now is great time to get involved in the class at the club.
The Royal Southern is proud to own three J/70s, which are available to be used by all Club members with suitable experience. The boats can be chartered for training or racing and come with all the necessary equipment for teams of 4-5 to use for cruising, training or racing.
To find out more about the J/70, see Key Yachting’s website.
The RS Feva/Optimist
The RS Feva is a one-design two-person sailing dinghy which provides the perfect platform for double-handed sailing for youngsters. There is a very active fleet of racing RS Fevas in the UK, which you can find out more about on the UK RS Feva Class Association website: https://www.rsfeva.org.uk/
The club has two RS Fevas and 8 Optimists which are available for members to hire and launch from the pontoon slipway. We hire these boats out on a self-sufficient basis, so members will be expected to rig, de-rig and look after the boats as if they were your own. If there is damage caused to one of the boats, please stop using the damaged equipment and inform the sailing office at the earliest opportunity.
Booking: The cost for RS Feva/Optimist hire is £10/day, which will be charged to your membership account. To book, please contact the sailing office on sailing@royal-southern.co.uk.
Hire Information
To arrange to hire of one of the Royal Southern’s boats, please contact the Sailing Office on sailing@royal-southern.co.uk or 02380 450 318.
If this is the first time hiring either a J/70 then don’t worry! You can be approved for charter by submitting a Sailing CV to the Sailing Office which cites your experience and qualifications. To speed up the process, you can find the Sailing CV form at the bottom of this page to fill and send with your enquiry.
A member of the Sailing Department will run through the boat with you before your first charter and will make sure you are confident to go on the water. Please therefore allow additional time for this when you first turn up to charter.
Contact the Sailing Office on sailing@royal-southern.co.uk or 02380 450 318 if you have any questions regarding the procedure or if you would like to organise your first charter.
